Happy Birthday Dear China!

October 2, 2009  |  Chengdu, China, Food, Luzhou, Travel  |  No Comments

Yesterday was China’s National Day, celebrating China’s 60th Birthday.

In the morning we watched some of the birthday parade, taking place in Beijing. The parade was amazing & the celebrations continued through until the evening. We watched as China’s army unveiled new weapons they have been working on, as tanks drove past & jets flew over the crowds, as people danced around floats representing each province, & as soldiers marched perfectly in time together.

Watching the parade made me feel very happy to be living in China, & made me feel like I was Chinese myself. The parade was wonderful!

We went into Luzhou & had a nice T-bone steak at a new steakhouse. Lunch was delicious (see previous posts for photos). We stayed over in Luzhou at a nice hotel & bargained the price down from 80 Yuan to 70 Yuan = $11.80 AUD. We bought some nice mooncakes to celebrate the Mid Autumn Festival (photos also in previous posts). Joel was given 3 mooncakes & an apple, wrapped up nicely – from one of his classes just before the holiday. I was also given a mooncake & a card from one of my classes.

Today we had a nice vegetarian lunch in town – Garlic Broccoli, Fried Potato & Fried Hollow Beans & rice, before returning home to see Charlie.

Tomorrow we are travelling to Chengdu & will be staying there for a few nights!! Will post more updates from Chengdu.

National Holiday = China’s 60th Birthday.

September 30, 2009  |  Chengdu, China, Luxian, Luzhou, Teaching, Travel  |  No Comments

Every year for the National Holiday in China, everyone will get about 3 days off work. This year everyone will have an 8 day Holiday from the 1st October – 8th October.

Our school is also having an 8 day holiday, but ours is from 30th September (today) until 7th October, & we then start school/teaching again on the 8th.

When 6, 000 kids leave the school in one morning to make the trip home, it can get pretty hectic. This morning the students all had one morning class before they left at 8:50 am. Even before their classes had finished, there was already a traffic jam outside – perhaps all the locals in town were leaving too.

We might possibly go to Chengdu for the holiday, at this stage, we haven’t decided yet. If we do go, we will only go for a 3 day break, to stock up on winter clothes.

Plus we can’t leave Charlie alone too long. Heh.
