So I was getting fed up with blogger and China’s constant blocking and randomly making it hard to upload things and post blogs. And wasn’t sure what to do.
Ursuli & I are both studying for a BA of Internet Studies, and part of our first unit was to have an online learning log, in the form of a blog. They recommended blogger, wordpress or livejournal. I tried wordpress.com, now everything was fine except… wordpress.com is blocked in China!!
So I had to use a public proxy server, the fastest one I found was based out of Saudi Arabia! It worked most of the time, but again if there was a random problem, it got tiresome to find a work around. Plus wordpress.com is pretty restrictive in what themes they have and what they let you do with the free wordpress.com version. No access to CSS, add-on themes or plugins.
So I thought about hosting a version of wordpress ourselves, $5 a month USD gets us a pretty good shared web hosting account, so I set up wordpress from wordpress.org, which is open source and free, on our new hosting account, and as a bonus we got a free domain name, so I picked ursuli.com.

We Imported the posts and comments from our blogger site, and decided to use ursuli dot com as our main travel blog site going forward. Wordpress is a much better platform to blog with, and we are aiming for 3 or 4 posts a week.
